Billy O’Regan & William Swanton on behalf of Ballydehob Community Council Ltd. attended a quarterly community alert meeting in Bantry in recent times hosted by the Gardaì etc. There are still some grants available to suitably qualified people for the installation of security chain locks, sensor lighting, smoke alarms and medi call to list a few. Momentum is certainly growing with regard to the upcoming St. Patrick’s Day parade. A lot of enquiries about participation in the parade are coming in and we very much welcome these enquiries and would be delighted to have more floats in the parade. At a special St. Patrick’s Day parade meeting it was unanimously agreed that we would ask our oldest senior citizen land lady Miss Nell Levis to be the grand marshal for the 2011 parade. We are honoured that Nell has agreed and we think we will have the oldest Grand Marshal in the country in attendance. Nell will be 102 years old on her upcoming birthday. As a result of an amenity grant aid approval to Ballydehob Community Council Ltd you will see in the coming months a number of improvements in the area 12 new decorative metal flower display holders will be erected on the footpaths of Ballydehob Main Street also additional picnic tables will be provided and the walkway from the car park on the Greenmount Road to the town park will be upgraded and handrails put in place. The tennis courts will get new nets and posts and the basketball court upgraded.

In next newsletter we will have a significant announcement regarding a new project which will give a great boost to our area and indeed the peninsula in general.

Next draw on Saturday 19th February. Jackpot is €1,000 and the draw takes place in Ina Daly’s.

Parents Plus Early Years Programme: This programme is a positive and practical course for Parents of Children aged 1 to 7 years. Parents are really important in helping their Children develop and grow up well, yet Parenting can sometimes be a difficult job and everyone needs support and help. This course will help you: Help your child communicate and learn in play, Discover new ways to help your child learn in everyday activities, Manage difficult behaviour such as tantrums or being aggressive and Develop a good relationship with your children and to enjoy being his/her parent.

The course does not purpose to find magic answers but hopes to help parents to gain the support of other parents and to find down-to-earth solutions for difficult situations. The focus of the course is positive and aims to build on your strengths as a parent and what you are already doing right. The course consists of eight parent groups meetings when we will give you input on behaviour management and child development and support you in applying these ideas in your home.

This course is open to parents from all backgrounds and all walks of lives. The next course will begin in May-further information will be available in late March or contact course facilitator Noeleen Murphy 028/37463 or 086/3254214.

Sam’s Visit:
Pupils from Scoil Bhríde were delighted to have their photo taken with the Sam Maguire cup which was on a recent visit to the school by Terry O’ Neill (Cork Selector). Also on hand were past pupils (R to L) Stephen O’ Mahony, Liam & Ronan Roycroft, Kodie Healy & Darren O’ Donovan.

Ballydehob Defibrillator Group: Are hosting training for Defibrillator, anyone wishing to train please contact Noeleen Murphy 028/37463 or 086/3254214 asap if interested. It consists of 2 half day training, final training is taking place in the Ballydehob Community Hall on 5th March.

Steve’s Next Challenge: All eyes were glued to Four Live on RTE 1 on Monday last as Steve Redmond talked about his next challenge, Ocean’s 7, which would see Steve swimming 7 channels around the World. Steve discussed with Maura how he hoped to be the first person to ever complete this challenge and how he had completed 2 of the 7 channels.

Steve went on to explain he hoped to complete the challenge in 2 years. Dave Williams (Friend/Manager/Fundraiser) along side Steve explained it would cost in the region of €100,000 between visa’s, travel and most expensive hiring a boat & crew. Ballydehob Charity Shop: open on Thursday-Saturday from 11am-4pm. We would like to thank everyone for all your donations of clothes, toys etc. Donations can be dropped off during open hours or during office hours, office number 37640.

Ballydehob Parent & Toddler: sessions on Thursdays from 10am-12pm in Ballydehob Community Hall, ages 0-6 years, refreshments available. All are welcome. More information contact Noeleen Murphy 028/37463 or 086/3254214.

Scór Na bPáisti: We wish all pupils of Scoil Bhríde who are participating in the Scór on Friday 18th February all the best of Luck. Doors open @ 7pm, next Scór is on Sunday 13th March.

Ballydehob Threshing Committee: On Saturday 5th February the Threshing Committee handed over the proceeds of 2010 Threshing. Schull Community Hospital received €3,500, West Cork MS received €3,500 and Ballydehob Youth Centre received €2,000. Barry O’ Brien spoke on behalf of Committee and thanked each & everyone who helped to make it a very successful Threshing week-end. All charities thanked the Committee for their generous donations & explained where the monies would be spend on vital services in our local area. Michael Ronan provided the music for the night, a great evening was had by all.
