ISSUE: August 2011

Here we are in the month of August and our typical summer weather is true to form. We welcome all our summer visitors and we hope they enjoy their stay. The pedal boats are in operation and are quite busy on the fine days.
The Community Council have put in place a number of new picnic benches in the playground and below the tennis courts. We hope the weather improves so they can be enjoyed.
Tennis lessons are being provided through out the summer in Ballydehob by Pat Mc Cann tennis coach. Anyone interested in taking part or forming a new tennis club in Ballydehob can contact Gerard Coughlan on 086-8508131.
An art exhibition by renowned artist Ms. Damarius Lysaght took place at Haugaard’s studio at the quay, Ballydehob and ran from July 28th to August 7th. The exhibition theme was Mount Gabriel over a twelve month period. The exhibition was hugely successful and attracted large numbers including the famous Ms. Angela Landsbury.
Organisers of this years’ summer festival have been very busy which runs from August 9th to Monday 22nd . There is a huge variety of events taking place including the annual boat gathering on Saturday 13th August and the official opening on Sunday 14th by Mr. John Greene. Well done to Barry O’ Brien and all the team on the summer festival committee.
The Ballydehob Community Council Shop is having its 1st sale with all items greatly reduced and all clothes items 2 for the price of 1. Please support the community council shop.
The Community Council Lotto jackpot is at €6,000 this week. The draw will take place next Saturday 13th August in The Irish Whip Pub. Ballydehob Community Council Weekly Private Lotto Draw
100% of lotto funds goes back into our local community. Last draw 06/08/11, no.’s were 2, 9 & 28. Jackpot €5,800, No Winner. €50, Mike McEntegart , €40 Lorraine Swanton , €30 Peggie Cronin , €25 John Minihane , & €25 Denis Griffin . Next draw on Saturday 13th August. Jackpot is €6,000 and the draw takes place in The Irish Whip.

Ballydehob Summer Festival 2011
It’s that time of the year again, starting on Tuesday 9th with a play Woman & Scarecrow in the Community Hall
Thursday & Friday are Charades nights
Friday night there is a Teenage Disco in the Youth Centre @ 7:30pm
Saturday 13th is the 8th Annual Cruinniú Bad Bhéal Átha Dá Chab on the pier from 2:30pm starting with Children’s activities, Live Music, Festival’s fundraising BBQ, Boats to arrive @ 4pm approx
Sunday sees the official opening with County Sound’s John Greene, Parade & Live street music by RESOUND
Lots to do all through the week, with walking tours, Table quizzes, Pub Talent
Thursday 18th sees the second play Elaine Murphy’s Little Gem @ 8pm.
Friday afternoon the Youth Centre are hosting a kiddie’s Disco from 4-6pm, 8:30pm in the Community Hall sees the return of the Irish Whip Wrestling Club.
Saturday 20th sees the final of the town league in the Community Field, from 7pm be on the Main Street for an evening of fun for all the family, with turnip races, adult wheelbarrow races, dog races & sheep races followed by Live Music By The Charms
Sunday 21st sees the Family Fun Day in the Community Field from 2pm, packed with lots for all the family, dog & pony & donkey show, children’s races, round hay bale races, Horse shoe, sandbag, welly & bowl throwing, The Youth Centre are hosting a fundraising BBQ, 7pm sees the return of the Duck Race which is a fundraiser for the Festival. We are delighted to announce the return of The Grand Fireworks Display off the 12 Arch bridge from 9:50pm followed by Live Street Music by MISFITS.
Our final night is Monday 22nd which sees The Final of the Pub Talent in Rosie’s Bar from 9:30pm.
We would like to thank our sponsors & all who have donated so we can run this Festival again this year, we would ask if you could support us by buying a Duck as the cost of running this festival is getting harder to fund every year. Thank you again & hope you enjoy the festival.

Ballydehob Cardiac First Responder Group
hosted a Family Fun Day on Sunday 10th July, €500 was raised on the day to help in the purchase of a second Defibrillator for the village. A big thank you to all who donated their time to play music & sing to entertain the crowd, to all who donated a spot prize for the raffle and to all who came out on the day to support this vital service for Ballydehob. With the proposed cuts by the HSE this is even more vital for our local area. As always we would like more people to be trained up for our call-out rota as numbers are small, anyone wishing to train please contact Group Co-ordinator Noeleen Murphy 086 325 4214 as we hope to do a second round of training in September.

Ballydehob Charity Shop
Open Thurs-Sat 11am-4pm weekly in the Ballydehob Community Hall. All clothes etc. in good condition are welcome and can be dropped off at the shop. Thank you for your continued support.

ICA home Produce Market
Each Friday morning @ 11am-12:30pm in the Ballydehob Community Hall. Home baking, jams, chutneys, vegetables, plants, crafts, potatoes and in-season fruits. Teas and coffees available.

Cork South West Association for Autism
We are a newly formed group of Parents based in West Cork & catering for Adults & the future needs of Children within the Autistic Spectrum. We are holding a very important meeting on Tuesday 30th August @ 8pm in the meeting room in Rosie’s pub Ballydehob. Our Second very important meeting is in West Cork Hotel on Thursday 1st September @ 11:30am with Joe McDonald CEO of Cork Autism Association, Philip Jordan, Chairperson, Cork Autism Association & Maurice Walsh, CEO Co-action West Cork. Anyone with an interest in or family member with Autism would be advised to attend these meeting as we are planning a major project that will benefit the future of our children & adults. Steve Redmond’s – Oceans 7 Swim Challenge
A fundraising night will be held on Friday 19th of August at 8:00 PM at the Sibín bar, on the way down to Baltimore. Proceeds will go towards the next leg of Steve’s Ocean’s 7 Challenge the Catalina Channel, California. A fun night is in store with D.J. Raffles, Auctions, Spot Prizes and the highlight of the night will be the waxing of Steve’s chest. I believe bids have been already been made for the opportunity to wax his Nipples. Hope to see you all there.
