Mizen Head Footbridge

The new Mizen Head Footbridge won the Engineering Project of the year in the Engineers Ireland Excellence Awards 2011. Thank you to everyone who voted!

The Bridge was opened to the public on St. Patrick’s Day 2011 and on Friday 5th August, the Mizen Head Footbridge was officially opened by Minister for Transport, Tourism & Sport, Leo Varadker T.D. The opening marked the successful completion of a very complex engineering project for RPS, Cork County Council and the contractor Carillion Irishenco.

The Bridge is a near-replica of the original Victorian Steel Structure which was completed in 1909. Since it’s re-opening the Mizen has attracted an estimated 55,000 visitors to take in the magnificent views on offer from the two viewing platforms and the bridge itself. Why not come along & visit this spectacular spot?

Mad Pride Ireland

22nd May: Family Fun Day: Ballydehob

Mad Pride Family Fun Day hosted its first event in West Cork in Ballydehob Village Park on Sunday May 22nd. The day was the result of an invite to Mad Pride Ireland from the West Cork Mental Health Forum to host the fully free event in an effort to break down stigma in mental health.

The occasion marked the ever growing relationship Mad Pride Ireland has with the HSE and local Community Groups and hopefully is the start of Mad Pride Family Fun Days appearing in communities all around the country.

One things for sure, we all enjoyed it here in Ballydehob!

The Oceans Seven

6th May: Steve Redmond completes Stage 3.

Congratulations to local man Steve Redmond who has recently completed another leg on his fantastic swimming challenge, the Oceans Seven. Steve has now swam the Irish and English channels and the Strait of Gibraltar, and has four more left to conquer:

  • the Cook Strait between the North and South Islands of New Zealand,
  • the Moloka’i Channel between O’ahu and Moloka’i Islands in Hawaii,
  • the Catalina Channel near Los Angeles, California, and
  • the Tsugaru Channel between Honshu and Hokkaido in Japan

Steve’s Strait of Gibralter swim started early at 6am in the morning and lasted five hours with a 3.5m swell for the last hour and a half. An achievement only matched by the level of commitment and training that he has put into the challenge. Please support Steve, and you can keep up to date here on his Facebook page.
